ADVICE: Here are some tips I have for getting an H1 in the Engineering exam:
- Equal time for equal marks: Some people spend all their time on the practical piece even though it is only worth a small percentage of their time: will it's nice to have something you can look back on and be proud of - for me it was about getting the most marks. This extends to not only the project but also the practical exam.
- Pick your favourite questions: The same type of questions come up every year. While there are 8 questions the only real change that happens any year is in the special topic that changes from year to year (the 2019 topic will be covered in our extended notes).
- Think on your feet: The SEC (State Examination Commission) aren't stupid - they know how predictable their papers are, and that there are Leaving Cert students hedging their bets (and consequently their LC points) on what will be coming up. Therefore, you have to be able to change your answers to what the question asks. Just make sure you link back to the question in your answer.
Engineering Special Topic 2021 - "Basic principles of operation and applications of hybrid technology in modern urban transportation"
A small and & cheap handout that covers the special topic for 20/21 "Basic principles of operation and applications of hybrid technology in modern urban transportation".
A must-have for students.
Leaving Cert Engineering Project
This is the Leaving Cert Engineering Project and Brief combination that helped me get an H1 in Engineering. This project contains the brief, SolidWorks CAD files and all the photos used in the project.
ADVICE:
Here are some tips I have for getting an H1 in the Leaving Cert Engineering Project:
-
Analysis:
Once you get the brief you need to make sure you analyse it word by word. You need to break down the brief you are given and explain the keyboards used by the Department of Education - this outlines what you can and can not have in your project.
-
Pictures:
As you progress through the project make sure you take photos so that they can be put into the brief. This helps validate that you did the work and adds some bulk to your brief.
-
Layout/Presentation:
Often overlooked is that of the layout. When making your brief it is key that the layout is set out. This is so that it is easy for the examiner to see all the points you've given.
Top tip: a layout similar to the DCG project is best (A3 Landscape). It's easy to read and makes your project stand out. -
Don't spend too much time:
This is similar to the construction project where the Project & Brief is only worth 25% of your final grade. Most students spend much more time than they should in doing the project. spending after class hours doing a section worth 10%. Make sure you spend the amount of time the section is worth in time. i.e spend 10% of your allocated time on the project, 50% on the exam etc.
